Project Details Of Chennai Metro
There are 2 phases in the Chennai Metro Rail Project which was commissioned stage-wise. It is the third-largest metro system in India. Currently, there are 40 stations under the Chennai Metro system.
Let’s check each of the phases in detail.
Chennai Metro: Phase 1
The Phase 1 Chennai Metro Rail Project covers a length of 45.046 km. There are two Corridors developed under Phase 1 Chennai Metro which are Corridor-1 and Corridor-2.
Corridor 1 also known as Blue Line will cover a distance of 23.085 Km between Washermenpet to the Airport and Corridor 2 also known as Green Line will cover a distance of 21.961 km between Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount.
Around 19 metro stations in Phase 1 Chennai Metro are underground and the rest of the 13 stations are elevated. 2 stations among them are interchange stations which are Alandur and Chennai Central.
There has been an extension work in Phase 1 which was from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar and covers a distance of 9.05 km. Around 9 stations are developed in this project, where 7 stations are elevated and 2 are underground.

Chennai Metro: Phase 2
Under Phase 2 Chennai Metro Rail Project there are 128 stations and it covers a length of 118.9 km. There are 3 Corridors under Phase 2.
- Corridor 3 covers a distance from Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 Km)
- Corridor 4 covers a distance From Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 Km)
- Corridor 5 covers a distance from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 Km)
It is planned to complete the Phase 2 Chennai Metro Rail Project by end of 2026. All the corridors are partly underground and partly elevated.
This process is still under consideration of MoHUA (Government of India).
