Thane Borivali Tunnel: Overview
The Thane Borivali tunnel is a twin tunnel. For the construction of this tunnel, the private land of 16. 54 hectares and 40.46 hectares of land in Sanjay Gandhi National Park have to be acquired.
Once this tunnel is built, it will stand as the longest tunnel in the state. It will also surpass the current under-construction Airoli-Katai road tunnel which is 1.7 km long.
Initially, the construction of this tunnel was proposed to Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
And later it was handed over to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
This is because MMRDA has great experience in undertaking and completing challenging projects like Metro lines which includes tunnel work as well.
At present, the only way available to travel between Borivali and Thane is through Ghodbunder Road. There is no direct way between Borivali and Thane. And this consumes a lot of time to travel between these locations
So, this is the reason for planning and initiating the Thane Borivali tunnel project.
