The tunnel in the Parsik Hills’ LHS (Left Hand Side) has been entirely tunnelled and is currently open on both sides.
There are three distinct sections to the Airoli Katai Naka Project. The 3.4 km distance connecting Thane Belapur Road & National Highway 4 will soon be cut in half to 1.69 km after the tunnel work is finished (under phase 1). The new segment includes a road, two tunnels, and an elevated road. As per project specifications, the tunnels will contain a total of 4+4 lanes, including 1+1 refuge lanes.
The tunnels are being built using the New Austrian Tunneling Process (NATM), a regulated blasting method. The tunnel is currently 67% complete, with the remainder 35% still under construction.
Travellers currently have to avoid Thane or Mahape. The travel between Kalyan-Dombivali & Navi Mumbai will be shortened by 7 kilometres thanks to this project. The initiative will be extremely helpful for commuters commuting to Ambernath, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Dombivli, and Badlapur.
