The much-anticipated Metro train service between KR Puram and Whitefield, operational on March 25 by PM Narendra Modi, would cut the one-hour (on average) travel time between the two locations to 23 minutes.
After launching the Metro, the Prime Minister is also expected to take advantage of it. The distance between the two towns is 1012 kilometres, however, due to the proximity of several businesses and IT parks, driving between them can take up to one hour during rush hour.
This Metro line was constructed as part of Phase II of the Namma Metro project, including the enhanced Purple Line between Byappanahalli and Whitefield. The enhanced Purple Line is 15.2 km long overall, compared to 13.2 km for the section connecting KR Puram and Whitefield.
On the other hand, it’s unclear when work on the section will start. The KR Puram Train Station and the Byappanahalli Metro Station are expected to be connected by BMRCL. Nonetheless, work is ongoing, and this section of the line is anticipated to open in the middle of 2023.
The metro fare for two stations from KR Puram to Whitefield is expected to be Rs 35.
Five of the seven trains that Bharat Earth Movers Ltd developed for this line will travel at a frequency of every 10 to 12 minutes. Upon the completion of the full line through Byappanahalli to Whitefield, BMRCL anticipates a surge in Metro ridership to 10 lakhs. There are also feeder buses planned.
