The Borivali-Thane twin tunnel project, a vital development that would significantly cut down on travel time between the two locations, has been put into motion by the MMRDA authority.
According to MMRDA officials, work on the twin tunnel will start before the start of the monsoon season. However, the project’s cost has gone up by about several thousand crores as a result of the execution delay.
The project was originally going to be completed by MSRDC, but chief minister Eknath Shinde transferred it to MMRDA.
It is important to remember that in addition to this tunnel, BMC also advertised for bids to build the Goregaon Mulund link road. Another project to connect the east and west will link Sanjay Gandhi National Park with this one.
According to the Report, the planned project will consist of a combined 11.8 km of twin tunnel and 1 km of roadways on either end of Thane and Borivali. A tunnel and a total of 23.68 km of new road development will be completed in the coming years.
The National Board of Wildlife has granted MMRDA wildlife clearance. The project must now receive environmental clearance in order to move further.
“The project will be carried out over a four-year period at a depth of 23 metres by MMRDA. Smoke detectors, Speed cameras, Security cameras, Lay-bay region and fire extinguishers will all be present”, MMRDA senior said.
The trip time will be cut by about 15 minutes once this is constructed below Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The current travel time by road from Borivali to Tikujini Wadi Thane is over an hour.
There will be three lanes in each of these tunnels, as well as emergency tunnels that connect them. The inability to go forward with projects has caused expenditures to rise from INR 11,235 CR to above 13,200 CR.
