More than 7,400 of the 75,000 property tax late payments who were sent notifications by the Nashik civic body have paid their debts totalling more than Rs 21 CR in the last 15 days, signalling that the initiative has begun to bear fruit.
The municipal corporation of Nashik geared up to collect back taxes from defaulters with only three months left in the fiscal year.
For the current fiscal year, NMC has set a goal of Rs 150 CR for the property tax department; however, the amount collected to date is just Rs 134 crore. By this time last year, NMC had already collected 110 crore rupees in property taxes.
NMC representatives did note that since property taxes are one of the primary funding streams for the civic organisation, they are working to recover as much money as they can.
According to NMC representatives, the combined property tax debt owed by these 75,000 defaulters is Rs 309 crore. Of which 7,400 defaulters have paid a total of Rs 21 crore in full and in part. An official stated, “We are anticipating additional debtors to pay their dues throughout the next two weeks.”
The NMC collected Rs 150 crore in property taxes during the most the recent fiscal year 2021–2022; this was the civic body’s maximum property tax collection since its founding.
If additional tax evaders pay their unpaid taxes, the officials predicted they will surpass last year’s greatest property taxation target and reach a total of Rs 360 crore.
The Nashik West division came in second with property collecting taxes of Rs 25.78 crore, accounting for 27.78 crores of the entire Rs 133 CR property tax collected by January 5.
